My company has implemented a reduced workweek for staff in order to cut costs. But my workload has not been reduced! I need to work more efficiently – please help!
The fact of the matter is – there’s never enough time! Allowing more time for work means less of it for family, friends and yourself. You can’t create more hours in a day but you can make the most of the hours you’ve got. Here are some simple ways to get you started:
- Plan your day and stick to your plan – At the end of each day, make a list of all the things you need to get done the following day. During your work day, stick to your plan and don’t let yourself get distracted. Having a prepared list also means you won’t waste time wondering what to do next. Tick off each item once it’s done to keep yourself motivated and on track.
- Prioritise your list – Arrange the tasks on your list in terms of urgency and importance. Don’t be tempted to complete the easy tasks first. Train yourself to use your limited time correctly in order to gain financially or accomplish your goals.
- Stop checking e-mail every 3 minutes – Compulsively answering every e-mail, phone call or SMS is extremely damaging to work efficiency. If you need an uninterrupted period of time, mute your Blackberry, close your e-mail programme and disable your instant messenger!
- Don’t procrastinate – Procrastination is the worst enemy of good time management. If something needs to be done, don’t wait – do it now! If you find yourself pushing uncompleted tasks into the next day, and the next day, and the day after that, then you need to ask yourself if that task should even be on your list in the first place.
