Handing in your notice is never an easy task, but what happens if a counter offer is put on the table. TMSAP

Whether or not you accept a counter offer depends on several factors, not just the salary package. Here are a few things to bear in mind if and when the time comes.

1. FLATTERY GETS YOU NOWHERE

It may seem very flattering to be offered a great pay rise but remember, training, set up costs, revenue generation time are all factors managers will look at, so perhaps you’re actually the cheaper and easy option. When making the counter offer, think about whether your manager is thinking about your position, their position, or the position of the company. Whether it is a new salary or new job title, you may be expected to deliver more or reach more targets as a result of the offer.

2. THINGS WILL NEVER BE THE SAME AGAIN

By handing in your notice you’ve now highlighted to your manager that you’re not happy, therefore even if you do accept a counter offer they will always question your loyalty. This will be a huge factor if internal promotions come up and may affect your chances, and if cutbacks are made, who do you think they will think of first?

3. YOUR CONSCIOUS MIND

You’ve made the conscious decision to take the next step in your career and taking on a new and exciting challenge. If you accept the counter offer, will you feel like you’re taking a step back? You need to ask yourself if you want to work for a company where it takes handing in your notice for them to recognise your worth.

4. WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?

Why do you want to leave your current job? Is it down to salary or personal progression and will the counter offer fix those reasons or are they just made a bit more tolerable?

It may seem the easy option to accept the counter offer and stay in your comfort zone but months down the line, will you regret your decision to take on a new challenge. Statistics show 80% of employees who accept a counter offer, leave within 6 months.

**If there are elements of your role that you’re not happy with, discuss them with you manager to see if anything can be done, a little more conversation a little less action can sometime be the answer**
